mySQL is a fantastic open source database that is integrated into standard internet languages like PHP. mySQL comes bundled with the webserver package we recommend for local web page development (http://www.devside.net/). It is also the standard database for most most popular web applications (Word Press, Moodle, PHP Forum, etc...). And it is available with almost all linux webhosting plans (at least the ones worth their salt)
mySQL comes with some awesome applications that rival those bundled with SQL Server. It is file based so it has flexibility like Access. You can just move the database file and associated indexes to another location and you are in business. But, unlike access mySQL can scale to handle medium to large scale implementations. It is also very fast. In general a great package that is available for commercial use for free.
