Securing files on your USB (jump, thumb) drive

Almost all of you out there carrying a USB drive have files that contain sensitive information. And, almost all of you have those files unsecured! How would you like a free and easy way of securing important files?

About OMZIFF

OMZIFF is an easy to use encryption utility that sporting various cryptographic algorithms to encrypt and decrypt textual files. These algorithms include: Blowfish, Cast128, Gost, IDEA, Misty1, AES/Rijndael, and Twofish

I prefer to use the default blowfish.

Download OMZIFF

Using OMZIFF

Once you have downloaded OMZIFF, place the executable on your USB drive. My personal recommendation is to create a directory on your USB drive that you want to keep important files that need to be secured. Place the Omziff.exe in this directory along with the files you want to secure.

Starting OMZIFF

Double click on the Omziff.exe executable.

Encrypting a file

  1. If not already defaulted, click on "Encrypt File"
  2. Choose the algorithm type.
  3. Click on the folder icon and select the file you want to encrypt under "Choose Input File".
  4. In the "Choose Output File" field enter the name of the file. If you are going to place the file in a different location click on the folder icon and navigate to the desired location.
  5. Enter a password. While this is not required, not doing so defeats the whole purpose of securing your files. Without a password anyone can decrypt your files. Choose one password and use it for every file you encrypt.
  6. Click "Encrypt.
  7. You need to now delete the original file you just encrypted.

Decrypting a file

  1. If not already defaulted, click on "Encrypt File".
  2. Choose the algorithm type.
  3. Click on the folder icon and select the file you want to encrypt under "Choose Input File".
  4. In the "Choose Output File" field enter the name of the file.
  5. Enter the password.
  6. Click "Decrypt.

What type of files can you encrypt?

I have encrypted text files, powerpoints, excel spreadsheets, word documents. You can pretty much encrypt any file type that you want. If encrypting a new file type you should probably test the encrypt/decrypt functions before deleting the original. OMZIFF can be used with any drive you have. I recommend using it with your USB drives. Use this product at your own risk.

Safe computing.
